May today be the day you pull back the curtains and let the sunlight pour in

When the sunlight pours into the room, it does not mean that everything is seen and understood right away. In fact, even in the most well-lit rooms, there are still shadows under the desk, the chair, behind the bookshelves, behind the bed frame. But the thing is, when sunlight pours into the room, there is enough of it to remind you: shadows do not hold forever. Eventually, they became more that figures and shapes, and you can see the objects for what they truly are.

There may be some shadows in your life that do not seem to have been touched by light just yet. Maybe there’s some uncertainty and you’re desperately waiting for answers to be made known to you. As you wait, remember this, you can still turn your eyes to the places where you can see light pour though. Sunlight may not have filled every corner of the room, but it has filled the floor. It has filled the ceiling, your bed, and the space beneath the door. Life is the same way. We have to live with the reality that we won’t have all the answers when we want them. We have to accept that our human brains can only process so much, and we have to wait to see what will be revealed to us to in time. But that does not mean we cannot delight in the beautiful things that Light has already shown us. Light still shines bright in the direction of hope, peace, joy, and love...even in our uncertainty. We can still choose to turn our attention to what is greater than us, no matter the shadows that find us.

She is slowly learning to exhale
File_001 (60).png

When you finally exhale, may you see this as your chance to rest. May you see this as an opportunity to slow down and notice whatever is beautiful right here. Even if it’s small. Perhaps it’s the smell of brewing coffee drifting in from the next room. Maybe it’s the sound of rain gently tapping against your window. Maybe it’s the warmth you feel inside the comfort of your sweater, as you prepare to step out into the cold morning air. Noticing these things will not take away all of your troubles. But they will create space for you to remember, there is more to see than your troubles. All around you, there is more to taste, smell, hear, and touch.

You may have a lot to say about what you have been going through lately, but may these small, beautiful things become a part of your story, too. Take pictures of them. Write about them in your journal. Point out some small thing that caught your eye to someone you care about. Yes, there are all these things going on all around you, and that’s just it: there are all these things going on all around you. “All these things” isn’t always bad. This world is a difficult place, but I promise you, there are beautiful things here, too…and you have a daily opportunity to make them a part of your story.

Keep chasing golden hour
File_001 (58).png

Keep chasing golden hour. Keep making room in the day to find beauty in the simple, subtle, and overlooked. There is no secret that the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset can truly be something beautiful, but how often do you stop what you are doing to admire it? You may be feeling a little overwhelmed lately, and maybe taking time for a sunrise or sunset seems like too much. But I just hope you know that sun is calling you to notice it just like it’s calling everyone else. It’s not only for the painters or the poets or the tourists…it’s for you too, on days like this. Let today be the day you rebel against monotony. Everyday may feel the same, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Golden hour is calling. Even on days like this.

You didn't know you could be this strong
File_001 (62).png

A year ago, you didn’t know you could be this strong. You didn’t know that all along, courage was rising up within you. Back then, it just seemed like you were trying to make it through. It just felt like you were trying to survive when all of the odds were stacked against you. You didn’t realize that every late night you fought through and every early morning you woke up to was a beautiful Light-woven reminder that you were far from finished yet. It did not feel like it then, but the seeds you were sowing were being watered. What seemed like it was only rain was actually the nourishment you needed to grow into the next stage.

Strength might not feel like strength in the moment, but the beautiful thing is, you still have moments like this to reflect, and remember just how far you have come. You have moments like this to finally acknowledge that you didn’t just “make it through.” Strength was rising up within you.

How wonderful it is to know...

March 5th

How wonderful it is to know that even though you do not know what this next season is going to look like, you are still going to grow in the way you were meant to. You are still going to be shaped into who you were meant to be, even in the wild of your uncertainty. Your story isn’t over yet. It may feel like it, especially when you are experiencing profound disappointment, but you must remember, you wouldn’t still be here if this were true. Something is stirring up inside of you. New life is still pouring through you. Allow yourself to trust beyond what you see that not a single breath that has left your body has been wasted. A failed relationship may make you feel that way. A lack of opportunity may make you question why you’re here. An unimaginable loss may be weighing on your broke heart right now. And that’s okay. You don’t have to hold yourself together perfectly in that place. You can be honest. You can be gentle with yourself. You can say, “I do not know what is going to happen, but I am going to try to take this day by day, breath by breath. I am going to try to be present to this moment in front of me, even here in my uncertainty.” This might be easier said than done, but remember, you are on a journey. Remember, this is all a practice. “Taking it day by day” isn’t learned all at once. Just know that in those moments when you find yourself worrying about tomorrow, questioning your purpose, your identity, if you can carry on, and if you even belong here, beneath it all, you are still growing in the way you were meant to. You are still being shaped into who you were meant to be. And knowing this, you are free to be at peac

She was not sure what to do when the storm rolled in from the sea, but she chose to believe she could still know peace
File_001 (60).png

When you have found yourself in a storm, I hope it doesn’t make you question yourself. I hope it doesn’t make you think that just because it is out of your control, you cannot know peace. I hope you remember that your peace is rooted within, and it does not blow away in changing winds. It does not go away even when the storm has ripped the shelter from over your head. You might not feel safe out here, and it is only natural to experience fear, but beneath it all, there is still time to take slow and intentional breaths, letting yourself be reminded, moment into moment, you may not have the answers for what you are experiencing, but you can still know peace. And no amount of mystery or uncertainty can ever take that away from you.

You may not know what lies ahead, but you also do not know just how brave you really are
File_001 (58).png

There are two sides to the unknown. There is the side of the unknown that says, “you don’t know what lies ahead, and you have no idea how difficult it might be” But the other side of the unknown says this: “you don’t know what lies ahead, but you have no idea how brave you’re going to be.” Whenever you think of the unknown future, it can be tempting to only think about what is going to happen to you. But what about the things that are going to happen through you? As terrifying as the unknown future might be, what if you still had the strength and bravery you were going to need? There is no way of knowing what tomorrow holds, but perhaps, even here, you can hope that good will come of it.

She is choosing to believe things will come together in the way they were meant to

Perhaps there is still time for things to come together in the way they were meant to. Perhaps on the other side of your early mornings and late nights, and “what ifs” and wonder-whys, there is a range of mountains that lead to sea where will you find endless, boundless peace, and be reminded that after everything that went wrong, you were being guided all along, right where you were meant to be.

There are so many things that have not gone according to plan, and it is absolutely understandable if you feel a little disheartened here, but I just hope you know that as long as you are still breathing, you are free to choose to believe, even though tomorrow is unknown, you can still hope for better things.

More tomorrow... Sincerely, Morgan Harper Nichols

More tomorrow...

Morgan Harper Nichols

When you remember much more than you want to,

When you remember

much more than you want to,

and the pain of it all

still finds you,

I hope you know

that nothing

in the past

can strip you

of the strength rising

like the dawn within you.

Because after the longest nights

and the loneliest mornings,

you kept going anyway.

You found hope

and radical courage

and you are not the same.

Nothing in the past

can you hold you back

from who are you becoming today.

There are so many times where we long to forget the past, but it seems that our brains just won’t allow us to. It seems that no matter how hard we try, we cannot erase those memories. We cannot stop those triggers from reminding us of our pain over and over again. There may not be an easy way to walk through this, but this is still true: the pain of it all may seem to follow you, but it does not have the ability to define you. It may be a part of your story, but it is not the whole story. It  is not how the story ends. Through all of this, you have gathered courage and you have found hope. You have learned how to keep breathing even when you felt like you could not go any longer. And I just hope you know, when you look at the whole story, those are the beautiful things that outshine the darker days. For now matter how lonely the nights have been, strength is still rising like the dawn within you.

“Let me

hold the door for you.

I may have

never walked

in your shoes,

but I can see

your soles are worn,

your strength is torn

under the weight of a story

I have never lived before.

Let me hold the door for you.

After all you’ve walked through,

It’s the least I can do.”

Collapse into the clearing of grace

Come running through the forest

of your thoughts

and collapse

into the clearing of grace.

Run through the wilderness

of who and what did not want you

and realize there is freedom for you

to still want better things.

It is okay to dream better dreams.

Even if what you lost

seemed to be everything.

Because the truth is,

you were always made for more.

You were always made to carry on

through the worst of things,

gathering all the strength you would need

to be who you are today.

Even when you were hurt along the way.

Even when you felt like a prisoner

in your very own mind, by grace,

you survived

and you still have permission

to roam free.

Roam free into the clearing.

Catch your breath.

Begin again.

You are allowed to do that.

You are allowed to want more

than these current feelings

and out in the clearing,

you are allowed to find healing.

amidst the things that have not made sense

Even amidst the things that have not made sense, I hope you can see there is grace for this: glorious unmerited favor that sustains your soul, even when you don’t know how things are going to go. You are working so hard right now and you are giving so much, so take a deep a breath, step full into grace and do not give up. One day you will look back on days like this and see that even in all of those things that made absolutely no sense, you made it through, because all along, there was grace for you. — MHN

Even here, in the wild, there is wellness for the soul.

Even here,

in the wild,

there is wellness

for the soul.

Even when you are tired

and out of breath,

and you have felt

that if you keep giving,

you would have

nothing left,

take heart,

for there’s a river

deep within the wilderness,

where the water runs wild

and the soul finds rest.

Slowly and gracefully,

the dried soul is replenished,

and even on the days

when you have been dealt

a weary toll,

even here,

in the wild

there is wellness

for the soul.

Even here, you are alive.

Even here, you are alive. Even in the wild of things you have done more than just survive. You grew. You grew a year older. You exhaled more breaths than you thought your body could bear. You have felt yourself drowning but somehow, you came up for air. All by grace: glorious unmerited favor and you didn’t have to do a single thing to deserve it. It’s for you. And even in you can’t make sense of why you feel this way, from yesterday alone, you are not the same. And it’s okay if things take time. If it takes time to be okay. It’s a journey you’re on. A journey marked with is grace. — MHN
