you are free to embrace this Glorious Day

You have been through so much.
You have carried the burden
of a thousand sleepless nights
on your tired shoulders.
You have waited and you have waited,
and you have found
unimaginable loss in the very place
where you thought
you would find abundance.

And somehow, through it all,
you also found unexplainable peace
right in the middle
of things you could not
understand,
you came wandering
into the Light
where you found
room
for new beginnings,
and you found
Love,
Eternal Love,
that rising from the ashes
of the suffering,
and forever
changing the tone
of everything.

And even here
in those moments
where you long to know
what comes next,
may you embrace
the boundless depths
of this Love
that does not let go
no matter your unknowns.

Even when it feels a little quieter
and your soul feels a little weaker,
Love has not let you go
Love has not let you go,
and you are free
to still have hope
all has not been lost,
and there is still more Life
to come,
and it is okay
to be undone
as you wait
for what’s to come,

for after everything,
you are free
to embrace
this Glorious Day
where Life
has risen
from the shadows
and Love has found you,
anyway.

Sincerely,
Morgan Harper Nichols

About this piece: it was a previous Easter when they received the news that their life would never be the same. I wrote back to them not knowing how things had developed in their story, but I wrote these words in hopes to encourage them in whatever season they were in, on this Easter. Often times when I am writing to someone who submitted a while ago, I do not know all that has developed, but I do want them to know they are Loved. I do want them to know that even if they are still waiting for answers there is grace to be found right here, where they are.

In between where you are and where you want to be - April 20, 2019

In between where you are and where you want to be, there is endless, boundless peace. There is an opportunity to be still, as you find yourself in the gap between the past and the future, knowing that this is the space where you were called to come alive. And it’s okay if you feel uncertain here. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You are free to take this moment by moment, and see the wholeness of it all: some things will be difficult. Some things will be easier. Some things will make sense, while other things leave you with questions. But all together, these mountains and valleys create a landscape, where somehow, through it all, everything finds its place.

And it will take time, it might even take years before some of the things you are wondering about start to make sense. But the more you can remember the wholeness of it all, and the more you can remember that you are a part of a greater picture, the more you will find that despite your unknowing, the grass, the trees, and the creatures throughout this vast landscape are still growing, and somehow, through it all, it all works together, and you too, are a part of that. Even in your in-betweens.

So take heart. Breathe deep. There is so much more to come. You have known unimaginable heartbreak, and worry, and you have also known the morning sun: a beautiful reminder of the peace and the new beginnings that are still available to you. No matter the sleepless night. No matter what you have been through.

You are not who you used to be.

In the moments where you are hard on yourself because you do not feel you have made it far enough, I hope you can remember how far you have come. I hope you can remember that there have been seasons of your life where it seemed like it would be impossible to make it here. You never saw yourself getting through the heartbreak. You never saw yourself overcoming the doubt. You never thought that you would get a year older, and rise up ten times stronger. But you did. And you must continue to give yourself credit for this. Just because no one has taken the time to notice your progress does not mean that you are not growing. You are still changing in beautiful ways. You are not who you used to be. You are growing wiser everyday and you are stronger than you think.

Sincerely,
Morgan Harper Nichols

You are still alive, and your presence matters here.

Peace is freedom from disturbance. It does not mean that the disturbance goes away=. It means that despite the disturbance, you can still know peace. You can still breathe deep. You can choose to believe: “I will be okay, even within this uncertainty.” Everything may not come together perfectly, in the way you hoped it would, but this present moment can still be good. You can still look where the Light pours in. You can still hear the music. You can still taste bittersweet fruit that reminds you: “I am still alive. My presence matters here. I am living. I am breathing. And I am choosing to believe that even here, that means something.” This is peace. And you are free to have peace, right here in your uncertainty.

Sincerely,

Morgan Harper Nichols

You are still worthy of love - April 16, 2019

You are still worthy of love. You are still worthy of knowing what it means to know to love and to be loved. I am sorry for the one who broke your trust. You should not have had to endure that. You should have never known what it meant for a heart to be broken in that way. But you are worthy of love, anyway. You are worthy of being able to move forward in beautiful, healing ways. You may feel the burden of the brokenness right now, but there is still much more to your story.

Your life is not a checklist.

Your life
is not
a checklist.

Just because the things you hoped for have fallen out of place that does not mean you cannot keep living a meaningful, purposeful life. You are not out of time. No matter what is not checked off on the “list,” you are worth so much more than that, and you are being called to go on the journey. Even amidst the brokenness. Even amidst the sadness. These feelings are real, but this is not all there is to you.

And you are going to move on.
My friend, you are going to move on.
You are going to wake up one day and realize:
certain things no longer bother you.
They may cross your mind from time to time,
but it will not feel the same,
and it is then you will realize:
you have grown
in beautiful ways.

You have spent so many nights trying to communicate what you feel. You have spent so many years trying to get to the core of the heartbreak. You have wondered what you missed or what you could have done differently. And you have also been invited to step into Light and believe that even amidst the brokenness, you still have the capacity for love. The one that hurt you does not have the capacity to take that from you.

And love will look different here and in the seasons to come but that will be a beautiful thing. You will find that was what you were needing: a new beginning. A new way of living. A new way of trusting that despite he one who broke your trust, you were still free to hope, to believe, to love

Sincerely,
Morgan Harper Nichols

It is okay if it takes time to get into a rhythm of things

Whether you are physically far from home, or you just feel far away from where you want to be, I hope you know it is okay if it takes time to get into a rhythm of things. You may see others finding their place before you, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be a place for you at all. That doesn’t mean there will not be an opportunity for you come forth in the way you were meant to.

This world can be a lonely place. Even in crowded cities. Even when you’re living “the dream.” Even when you have so many things to be grateful for, you can still wonder, “but is it enough?”

You may wrestle with this question from time to time, but I hope it never stops you from living. I hope it never stops you from realizing: no matter how long you have wandered these streets, you are not lost out here. You have been found in glorious Light, where you are growing in the way you were meant to, and where there is endless, boundless grace to take time to find a new rhythm.

Sincerely,

Morgan Harper Nichols

Just in case no one has told you lately - April 15, 2019

Just in case no one has told you lately, the mere fact that you keep choosing to show up everyday after everything you have been through only points to your strength. It might not look like it in the moment, when you are heading into yet another week filled with a thousand things to do, and you don’t see how you could possibly be considered strong when you are barely making it through, but I promise you, this, right here is strength. Breath into breath, moment into moment, it takes strength to be here. It takes strength to keep showing up everyday even when there is so much in your life that is still uncertain.

You do not have to be invincible before you can be strong.
You do not have to be fearless before you can have courage.
You do not have to be where you want to be before you take a loving look at yourself with gratitude for how far you have come.

Remember what it was like last year and how you never thought you would make it through. Remember the worry that kept you awake at night and the heartbreak that made it hard to start the day. Somehow, through it all, you got up anyway. You smiled where it seemed impossible. You found Light where everything was broken.

Oh, if only you could see yourself right now, a year from now. It is hard to imagine, but you would be so proud of her. You would be at awe that amidst all of the things she was faced with, she still exhibited this unbridled strength. She kept hope when it did not make sense. She found peace right here in the wild of it.

I just wanted to take some time today to remind you how strong and how brave you are. I know that you are still dealing with so much on the inside when so many people think you have moved on, on the outside, but I just wanted to be one person to let you know that the beautiful strength you have right now should not be overlooked. Considering all you are carrying on your shoulders, it takes bravery to be here, and I just wanted to take a moment to affirm that strength within you. Even here, you are strong. You are moving right along.

Sincerely,

Morgan Harper Nichols

You are going to be okay. Not perfect, but okay. - April 14, 2019

I can only imagine how difficult it must be as you arrive in a place that you have waited to be in for so long, only to feel even more uncertain as you get ready to cross the finish line. It's hard to celebrate all you have accomplished when you have no idea what lies on the other side of this. And you feel lost in the in between of it all as you wait for answers and new beginnings. But perhaps it is here you will learn to be strong. Perhaps it will be here that this heart of yours that longs for something more is being prepared for something more that is so much greater than you.

And of course you cannot see it yet, and you might feel overwhelmed by the mystery of it all, but you are going to be okay. Not perfect, but okay, because even in the uncertainty, you can take this day by day.

You do not have to have everything figured out all at once, and you are free to go through each season, each week, each day, one by one.

Allow yourself to look around you and realize that this season you are in will never be here again, and perhaps that's what makes it meaningful, and worth having gratitude for. Even if it's nothing but a series of a small things, the joy you find you truly matters.

Sincerely,

Morgan Harper Nichols

You will rise, anyway - April 13, 2019

You have given so much to this, and I just hope you know that even here, your work is not in vain. It might take a little longer to arrive where you want to be, but you are still free to take this day by day. Even when the world seems to be moving on without you. Even when you are weary of waiting. Even when you are having to watch others reach the same exact heights you were reaching for, you are not a failure. You are not behind. You will still arrive where you need to be in time. Your story is just going to look a little different. Yes, it is going to look a little different. You are going to look back on this season and realize, there is no way you could have predicted these outcomes. But you will rise, anyway. You will find a strength you did not know you had. You will find that even when things did not go according to plan, it did not hinder you from traveling the course. All along, you were being prepared for something so much greater than you. And no matter the additional time it took, it was not too late for you.

So knowing this, I hope you can feel free to make the most of where you are. I hope you can travel light with an open heart, and embrace the grit and the gold of it all. So much has fallen apart, but new things will fall in place. So much has left you feeling boxed in, but you are still worthy of finding your space: to rise and rise, and embrace beautiful change. For it is out here on the road, you will experience the highs and lows, and in the wild of it all, you will find: you are only growing stronger

So hold on a little longer.

Even here, you are getting stronger.

Even here, your progress matters

and you are moving right along.

Sincerely,

Morgan Harper Nichols

Slow progress is still progress - April 12, 2019

From here, it is so hard to imagine how you could ever be able to trust again. It is hard to hope for a future that will so different than what you planned. But even here, you are free to believe that even though so much changed, and you just won’t be the same, you still have this day to breathe deep, anyway. You still have this moment to remember: you are a human being and it is okay to take this time to sort through what you are feeling.

In this season,

progress may be slow,

but it is still progress,

beautiful progress,

and it matters more than you know.

These words written to someone who shared their story with me via my site. Every week, I randomly select people who submit stories or topics for me to write about and it is my hope that these words and pieces of art can speak to you, too.

Travel slow under this desert sun - April 11, 2019

It is hard to see how with everything you are going through that the same radiant Light you shine on others is still shining within you, too. It is hard to see that through everything you are giving, you have not been emptied, and there is still a river of life flowing through you, even as you wander through this endless desert.

But I just hope you know that there is more to you than what you see. There is more to you than what you are feeling. There is more to your story than the chapter you are currently in. You are having to deal with a lot right now, so that is why it might be difficult to see how this is true, but I promise you: there is more to you. There is more to you than having to be the one who is happy for everyone else. There is more to you than having to carry the burden of your worries by yourself. You are free to let things go. You are free to take time to rest. You are free to be honest that amidst all you are giving, you need some time to slow down, and be breathe, and be renewed in the arms of grace.

May you always remember that joy is still available to you even in your quieter moments. You are still filled with radiant Light even when you cannot find the laughter. Every breath that leaves your body is a sign of the life within you...a sign that somehow, there is a still a rhythm to it all, amidst all that you are going through.

So travel slow under this desert sun. Take moments to rest when you need to. For even in your quieter, slower moments, boundless grace will find you. You may feel like you are far away from home. You may feel far away from yourself. But the more you stay connected to this life, the more you will be reminded: right now, this is where you belong. And you are learning what you need to learn. You are growing how you need to grow. And all of this is a journey home.

Sincerely,

Morgan Harper Nichols

You belong in this world just as much as anyone else - April 10, 2019

I hope these words encourage you to keep telling your story. I hope you know that no matter the things that have not come together in your life, that does not mean you have to stop dreaming. That does not mean you have to stop exploring, creating, following your curiosity. You belong here just as much as anyone else. You are free to make things and make a difference just as much as the people you look up to.

Please do not make yourself small.

Please do not sell yourself short.

You have too much to say.

You have too much truth stirring up like fire within you and it’s waiting to flow through you.

I know there a lot of people saying things right now, but someone still needs your words. Your voice. Your presence. No one tells the story like you do. No one knows the way you felt that night but you. No one knows the depths of the lies you used to believe but you. No one knows just how much grace has meant to you.

Please don’t look at the numbers. Please don’t worry about the outcome. Allow yourself to be present to this moment and let truth come pouring out. Write it all out in your journal. Paint it into your paintings. Turn your truthful, graceful words into a text message and send it to a friend in need. Your presence, your voice, and your story matter so much more than you think. - Morgan Harper Nichols

You are still being directed right where you need to be - April 9, 2019

These past few years, the year has not begun in the way you hoped it would. In a time where you were supposed to be celebrating new beginnings, you were met with ending, after ending. You have been stretched in ways that tested your strength, absorbing the little energy you had left. You have worked so hard to create stability and a dream, only to have it all swept out from beneath you. And now you are here, finding your way another month, waiting for newness, waiting for an opening. I hope that it is here, you can keep your heart open. I hope you can see that even in the weariness of the waiting, this heart of yours still beats for more. You may not be in a rhythm quite yet, but there is a rhythm to your heartbeat, and even in the uncertainty, that means something. There is a steadiness there you can cling to.

And the truth is, it might take a little longer for things to fall in place in the way you it want to. It might be longer than expected before you see how it all comes together. But I just hope you can remember: you have done all you can to make it this far, and the things that have not fallen in place do not define who you are. There is so much that is happening that is greater than you, and it is okay if you cannot make sense of it. It is okay to sit in the wonder and find that somehow, there is still a wholeness to it all, and you do not have to have it all together to experience beauty right here in your chaos.

So keep taking deep breaths, believing: you are far from finished yet. Grace is still running through the wilderness of your disappointment leading you to the river of an ever-flowing peace, singing: you are not lost. You are not lost. You are still being led right where you need to be. Even in the weariness. Even in the waiting.

Letting go, trusting, and tough conversations - April 8, 2019

While you wrestle with the possibility that things may not go back to how they were, I just hope you know it is still a sign of your strength that you are learning how to work through this. The mere fact that you have made the choice to no longer hold it all in is a sign that you know deep within: letting go brings healing. Letting go brings healing. And not that letting go makes everything easier...in fact, there are times, where initially, it might only remind you of the wounds...but even there, it can also remind you: My Dear, you are worthy of this release. You are worthy of being free from all these things that broke your heart. Even here, you are stepping out of the shadows and into the Light. You are learning to face what you truly feel, and say the words you really want to say. You are learning to be brave. You are finding that even though it might be so hard to have to move on in this way, there is still boundless grace that says, your story will go on, anyway. And within this grace, you will heal. You will carry the lessons you learned in this season into new seasons. You will wake up years from now and realize that this heartbreak was still a part of a greater story. You will find that there was so much more ahead of you, even when it was hardest to believe.

So no matter how tomorrow goes, please do not be too hard on yourself. You have been broken open to heal, and you are not weak for feeling tender. You are doing the right thing in being honest, in stepping forward into the Light, trusting that no matter what is revealed, there will be space to be alright. Not perfect, but alright. And you can move through the hallways with courage, knowing you did everything you could, and the future can still be beautiful, Light-woven, honest, good.

Sincerely,

Morgan Harper Nichols
